Dahlia at home
Dahlias at home go well with other plants.
March is nearing completion. It's time to get the dahlia tubers that have been stored there since the fall from the refrigerator. Check the planting material, if necessary, treat with manganese solution or fungicide, dry. And you can proceed to the first stage — planting plants in boxes.
Boxes must be left indoors so that the plants are not damaged by frost. During this time, compact bushes will develop that will bloom in the garden much earlier than those that you plant immediately in the ground.
The second stage is the planting of tall varieties of dahlias. First, drive in a stick to which the plant will be tied (after planting, driving in a stake, you risk damaging the planting material). Tie up the plant, taking into account that the stem will become thicker from time to time so that the twine does not crash into it.
Want to get a strong, beautiful plant with good inflorescences — dahlia bushes must be formed for this. For this, tall dahlia varieties leave no more than two shoots on the plant. The lower part of the stem 20 cm tall should be without side stepsons. Remove stepchildren as early as possible, otherwise the bush will overgrow them, delaying flowering and reduce the quality of inflorescences. Stepsons are lateral shoots growing in the axils of the leaves. In the future, this will promote the ripening of tubers and they will better tolerate the storage period (autumn — winter).
To increase the number of inflorescences at the main shoot make a pinch over the fourth pair of leaves.
During flowering, do not forget to remove the faded flowers, they spoil the appearance and delay the development of new buds.
In July, remove all leaves from the stem at a height of 30 cm from the ground. And at the same time, spud the bush. They make in order to improve the conditions of root formation and shoot resistance.
In the last days of August, the plant is spudded again to a height of 10 — 15 cm — this will protect the tubers from freezing.
It is not necessary to pinch low-growing and border varieties.
As indoor plants, dahlias are grown less often than indoor chrysanthemums.
These are hybrids with a height of 35 cm. They like coolness and light, but they are shaded from the midday sun. Watering abundant all year, spraying will benefit them. Do not need pruning. After flowering they are thrown away, and sown again in spring.
The dahlia is also endowed with positive qualities by the fact that “where dahlia grows, wheatgrass does not live there.” This is verified, there is no wheatgrass around the bushes.
Dahlia in the language of flowers means caprice, inconstancy. And a gift bouquet of these flowers, as confirms a frivolous relationship.
And in Japan, on the contrary, they attribute this flower to a special meaning — it is a symbol of the victorious power of life, good taste, greatness, gratitude.
And it seems to me that such a beautiful flower cannot bring inconstancy. If the bouquet decorates any room. I agree with the Japanese, dahlia is good taste and greatness.
